In a project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research we investigate how local dose rates in a storage facility for radioactive waste subject to complex licensing conditions can be substantially reduced merely be rearranging the waste drums. With methods from Constraint Satisfaction Programming we demonstrate a dose rate reduction of up to two orders of magnitude, depending on the working time required to rearrange the drums. All licensing conditions are fulfilled for all rearrangement realizations.
